New Cricket Pavilion, Upper Club, Eton College
The addition of a new pavilion to an existing Victorian lodge
located adjacent to the Thames was designed to improve the existing facilities
and the building's relationship with the pitch whilst complementing the ornately
decorated lodge. New accommodation includes a double storey clubroom, kitchen
and toilets, scorer's box and viewing verandahs. Existing changing rooms were
also refurbished.
Due to flood plain restrictions, the new building had to be
erected on concrete stilts to keep the floor plate above the anticipated 1 in
100 year flood levels. The gentle curve on plan allows the high level scorer's
box to face the pitch for a clear view of the game.
The use of brickwork and cast stone borrows from the original
lodge, whilst the use of an exposed structural steel frame and stainless steel
balustrading gives a contemporary identity to the building without detracting
from the original.
