ST MARY’S SCHOOL ASCOT - CHAPEL - Gallery Extension and Chapel Refurbishment

The School wished to extend the School Chapel to increase general occupancy during services.  ESH proposed that the most attractive, practical and economical solution would be to increase the size and capacity at the rear of the Chapel.

To reduce the impact of the new gallery on the historic building a cantilevered curved glass balustrade was specified. The existing organ was reconditioned but otherwise remained unaltered.  However the console was relocated to improve the layout.

The previous gallery seated girls on straight pews, and the new proposals to accommodate up to 80 girls required a complete re-arrangement of the seating. New curved pews were designed and installed in tiers to improve the sightlines between singers and conductor and enhance voice projection. A raised platform for the conductor was included in the design at the front of the choir loft.

The entire chapel was renovated and the lighting and audio visual installation upgraded to provide scene setting. Alterations were also made to the surrounding buildings to accommodate the additional capacity and provide enhanced fire escape routes from the main chapel and Gallery.
