The Orchard Centre, St Mary’s School, Ascot Edgington Spink & Hyne architects won a limited competition to design a new sports hall set in Green Belt for St Mary’s School, Ascot, a private girls’ school. The structure is a steel frame clad in brickwork with slate roofs which sweep down to low level eaves including a curved roof and glazed canopy over the double-height entrance. To minimise the apparent massing of the hall, the ancillary accommodation, including: a dance studio; fitness suite; two squash courts; offices; and changing facilities is arranged around two sides of the multi-purpose hall, which has been designed to national standards and accommodates four badminton courts. A first-floor decked terrace serves the social area and overlooks the school’s running track and athletics fields. The sports hall is finished in fair-faced blockwork with a sprung composite floor and is naturally illuminated by high-level rooflights. A spectators’ gallery overlooks both the sports hall and the squash courts. Back to Educational Project Listing |
